Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) celebrated the achievements of its inventors during the Technology Transfer (T2) Inventor Recognition Showcase. The event took place on December 3rd and recognized the outstanding achievements of NSWC Crane scientists and engineers, whose technical excellence and contributions aid the warfighter.
"This annual event is a great way to showcase our inventors and the intellectual property they have developed and now protected via our patent process. The NSWC Crane Technology Transfer team and Office of Counsel are to be commended for their outstanding execution of this critical program," said NSWC Crane Chief Technology Officer Rob Walker.
T2 is the process by which knowledge, facilities, intellectual property or capabilities developed through federal research and development (R&D) meet public and private needs. For NSWC Crane, this is done through partnerships with outside enterprises including industry, academia, small businesses, other government entities, and more. The patent process is a key step in T2.
Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADA) benefit both government and industry. Major findings from a study of NSWC Crane's 207 CRADAs found that $2.8 billion in total sales and new product resulted from existing CRADAs, $2.6 billion in new sales products for the United States military, and created $7.3 billion in total economic impact nationwide.
NSWC Crane is a part of the United States Department of the Navy's In-house Laboratory Independent Research (ILIR) and the Independent Applied Research (IAR) programs, which provides additional funding for technology innovation and T2.
"This year marks the second annual participation of NSWC Crane in the prestigious Department of the Navy ILIR and IAR Programs. These programs are exclusive to activities capable of conducting top-tier basic research that leads to significant discoveries and inventions. Our continued inclusion in this program reflects the ongoing growth and evolution of our organization as a leading federal laboratory," said Dr. Jon Dilger, the Director of Research and Command Chief Scientist at NSWC Crane.
Through these funding opportunities, NSWC Crane forges stronger business connections, inspires a wider array of students, and approaches emerging national security questions with innovative solutions for warfighters.
"NSWC Crane has brilliant people providing solutions to our warfighter's toughest technical challenges. We are thankful for our involved and supportive leadership team and a workforce that recognizes the work that our inventors are accomplishing here," said Maria Duran, NSWC Crane's Technology Transfer Director. "The technology is a crucial part of the broader innovation ecosystem."
NSWC Crane successes within the T2 realm can also be attributed to the culture at NSWC Crane, where both innovation and growth are actively encouraged with the primary mission to support the warfighter and fit within the broader mission of the Department of Defense at large.
