Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Robert Miller, a 1989 graduate of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Military Health Institute at UT Health San Antonio. Miller, who brings more than 30 years of military service, officially began his role on October 15.

Miller took the reins from fellow USU alumnus retired Air Force Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Byron Hepburn, USU class of 1987, who held the role for more than a decade. Hepburn, the former deputy surgeon general of the Air Force, now plans to focus on his personal pursuits while continuing to advance healthcare as the chair of the San Antonio Medical Foundation.

"It's been an honor to serve as the Director of the UT Health San Antonio-Military Health Institute over the past 10 years," said Hepburn. "I know that Dr. Bob Miller and the MHI team will climb to higher levels of excellence."

Miller held a number of significant leadership positions over the course of his military career, including Surgeon General of both the United States Air Force and Space Force. In his new role as Executive Director, Miller will guide the institute's research programs and foster partnerships with local, state, and federal organizations. His leadership is expected to drive new initiatives that will bolster military medicine and expand support for the military community.

"Lt. Gen. (Dr.) Robert Miller's extensive background in military medicine and proven leadership abilities make him exceptionally qualified to lead the Military Health Institute at UT Health San Antonio," said USU President Dr. Jonathan Woodson. "His selection as Executive Director not only highlights his unwavering commitment to enhancing the health and well-being of service members, veterans, and their families, but it also reflects proudly on USU and its legacy of producing leaders in military health care."

"I'm honored to join the Military Health Institute and collaborate with a dedicated team committed to advancing military health. Together, we will continue to innovate and improve care for the military community in South Texas and beyond," Miller said.
