New three-month security of supply outlook published

A new security of supply outlook modelled by the Electricity Authority Te Mana Hiko shows that there is sufficient hydro generation capacity and thermal generation to meet predicted hydro and thermal demand for the next three months.

The three-month outlook for the electricity system published today is a look ahead at how the energy position might evolve under three wide-ranging scenarios.

The outlook covers the period from 2 December 2024 to 2 March 2025 and is in addition to existing security of supply forecasting work carried out by the system operator.

"The analysis uses thermal fuel data gathered under the Authority's section 46 information gathering powers which is not available to the system operator," says Arihi Mahuika, General Manager Legal, Monitoring and Compliance.

"The report provides all stakeholders with information relevant to the supply and demand outlook which helps them make informed decisions and respond proactively to mitigate risks."

The analysis, which draws on confidential and commercially sensitive information that has been redacted for public release, will be regularly updated to ensure all stakeholders are kept abreast of the latest developments regarding the security of supply outlook.
