The School of Art & Design is excited to introduce a new Art Minor for all Alfred University undergraduate students, launching in Spring 2025. This program is designed to develop essential creative, critical, and visual thinking skills that benefit students personally and professionally, complementing their primary fields of study.

Rooted in the founding vision of the New York State College of Ceramics (NYSCC), which values interdisciplinary learning, the Art Minor encourages students to integrate creative practice with other academic pursuits. This approach resonates with the NYSCC's philosophy that no branch of study stands alone, making it ideal for students who aim to enrich their education through an interdisciplinary learning experience while not pursuing professional artistic careers.

Students will engage in a curriculum that fosters perceptual awareness, creative problem-solving, and visual communication skills, mirroring Alfred University's historic commitment to providing a "complete education" through diverse academic resources.

Lauren Lake, Dean of the School of Art & Design, commented on the minor's impact, stating, "The Art Minor broadens students' ability to think creatively and approach problem-solving through a unique visual perspective in, though, and about the visual arts and design."

The 16-credit curriculum includes 12 credits in non-major studio art courses and 4 credits in Art History, with various studio options available each semester to accommodate students' interests. Enrollment begins this spring, and students are encouraged to contact their advisors to explore course options and requirements.

This program promises to attract a wide range of students, allowing them to engage with the visual arts in ways that enhance their primary studies and expand their intellectual and professional perspectives.
