NEW YORK [October 7, 2024] The Wall Street Journal Opinion in collaboration with Palladium Pictures is launching a new series of short documentary films, WSJ Opinion Docs. Each film in the series will tell a dramatic true story from the recent past about important issues that deserve attention and examination.

"We are pleased to offer our journalism in a new form," said Paul Gigot, The Journal's Editorial Page Editor. "The principals of Palladium Pictures have built their reputation by being willing to take on stories that others haven't, and they've done it with exemplary craftsmanship and integrity. They are the ideal collaborators for this new venture."

WSJ Opinion Docswill fill an underserved market niche. While other prominent news and magazine sites feature short, highly produced documentaries, they typically reflect the same point of view: that of the media orthodoxy. WSJ Opinion Docswill share the perspective of the Journal editorial page, and they will tell stories in a straightforward, fact-based manner stories that have been often ignored or misreported.

"It's an honor to collaborate with one of the most respected institutions in journalism," said Michael Pack, Palladium Pictures's President. "By combining The Wall Street Journal Opinion's in-depth research and unique perspective with our visual approach to storytelling, we can create compelling, noteworthy short films not available anywhere else."

Premiering today, "Get the Jew": The Crown Heights Riot Revisitedsheds light on the worst antisemitic riot in American history, which occurred in New York in 1991. After a car crash in which a Hasidic Jewish driver accidentally hit and killed a black child, rioters set upon the local Jewish neighborhood in Crown Heights. Jews were attacked in the streets, along with Jewish stores, homes and cars. One Jew was stabbed to death, but Mayor David Dinkins and the NYPD allowed the riot to rage for three full nights, egged on by racial provocateurs, while many in the media played down or excused the antisemitism at the heart of the violence. The film's interviews include key players in the story, such as Rev. Al Sharpton and then-Deputy Police Chief Ray Kelly, as well as WSJ Opinion writer Elliot Kaufman. The current wave of antisemitism makes these events newly relevant and worthy of reconsideration.
