Boulder to replace aging 63rd Street waterlines; travelers can expect impacts

The City of Boulder will replace two waterlines, which supply drinking water to the community, along 63rd Street between CO 119 (also known as the Diagonal Highway) and Jay Road as part of the 63rd Street Waterline Replacement Project. Construction will replace aging infrastructure with newer, more easily maintained waterlines to improve water distribution resilience and meet increased demand for drinking water serving the Gunbarrel community. Work is anticipated to start on Monday, Oct. 7, and end in fall 2025.

While the city will minimize traffic impacts to the fullest extent possible, there will be travel impacts on 63rd Street just south of CO 119 to Twin Lakes Road. View construction impact updates and suggested detours for driving, biking and walking on the city's Cone Zones map. Travelers can expect:

  • Impacts to the vehicle lanes, with single and full lane closures as needed, bus stop impacts, and detours for people walking and biking along 63rd Street from the railroad tracks south of CO 119 to Twin Lakes Road.
  • 63rd Street to be periodically reduced to single-lane vehicle traffic, anticipated for this winter.
  • A full road closure of 63rd Street, between Nautilus Drive and Jay Road, with detours, anticipated for this winter.

Community members can continue to access nearby neighborhoods and businesses throughout construction, though may experience detours. Access to specific driveways may be impacted. There may also be limited local impacts to water service for short periods of time during construction. The project team will work directly with affected community members in advance of local impacts. Community members in the area may also experience nearby travel impacts from stateand countytransportation projects, unrelated to this city project.

This project phase will replace a 12-inch and 30-inch waterline. Following the anticipated completion in 2025, the city will continue the waterline replacement on 63rd/62nd Street from Jay Road to Boulder Creek, with work anticipated for 2025-2026. This project is funded by the city's Utilities Fund. For more information, visit the project webpage.
