Franklinton - On December 15, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 25 near Stafford Road in Washington Parish. The crash claimed the lives of 42-year-old Tequilla Santee, 11-year-old Daniya Carter, and 3-year-old Dylan Wilson of Covington.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Santee was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on LA Hwy 25. At the same time, a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 18-year-old Logan Schmalz of Franklinton, was northbound on LA Hwy 25. For reasons still under investigation, the Silverado crossed the centerline and struck the Tahoe head-on in the southbound lane.
Santee was properly restrained and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Carter and Wilson, both passengers in the Tahoe, were unrestrained and pronounced deceased at the scene. Two more passengers in the Tahoe were critically injured and transported to a local hospital, one of whom was properly restrained and the other unrestrained. Schmalz was properly restrained and transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers for analysis. This crash remains under investigation and Troopers will forward their findings to the 22nd Judicial District Court District Attorney's office for consultation of criminal and/or traffic violations pending the completion of the investigation.
Properly wearing a seat belt dramatically reduces the risk of injury or death in a crash. Louisiana law requires everyone in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, to be buckled up at all times. Seat belts save lives, and taking this simple step can make the difference between life and death. The Louisiana State Police urge motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid driving while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, and always ensure all occupants are properly restrained. If you witness hazardous driving, dial *LSP (*577). Child safety seats provide crucial protection for children in crashes, but many are not installed correctly. If you're unsure about your child's seat or its installation, visit your nearest Louisiana State Police Troop or check the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission for the nearest fitting station. Ensuring proper use of car seats and booster seats helps save lives and prevent injuries.
