EU releases 150 000€ million in emergency assistance to help victims of typhoon Yagi in Laos
Following the devastating impact of typhoon Yagi across several countries in Southeast Asia, the European Union has released €2.2 million in humanitarian aid to help those populations most affected. This funding will help address the most pressing needs, such as food, water and sanitation, and healthcare.
The largest amount, up to €1.2 million, will support the humanitarian response in Myanmar, where Yagi lashed areas already significantly impacted by the ongoing armed conflict. Additionally, €650 000 will be allocated to Vietnam, €200 000 to the Philippines, and €150 000 to Laos.
To support the emergency response, the EU also activated the Copernicus Emergency Satellite Mapping Service on 11 September. Ten maps have been produced so far.
Typhoon Yagi has left a trail of widespread destruction in its passage through Northern Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar. It is one of the strongest typhoons recorded in the region in decades. So far, around 500 people have died, mostly in Vietnam and Myanmar. In the Philippines, while passing earlier with less intensity, the interaction between Yagi and the southwest monsoon also caused severe floods.
Janez Lenarčič, Commissioner for Crisis Management said: "As Southeast Asia has suffered one of the deadliest typhoons in recent years, our thoughts go to all the victims and their families. The EU stands ready to help the affected communities with all the means at its disposal. This new funding will help people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines to address their most immediate needs".
