Sumter County Announces Debris Collection and Removal Plan

Sumter County's debris collection and removal contractor will be collecting debris from Hurricane Milton. Given the amount of tree and vegetation debris within Sumter County and all of our cities that we provide this service, collecting and removing debris will take some time, depending on the area where you live.

For residents in The Villages® development area, please pay attention to the debris collection and removal instructions from The Villages District Government https://www.districtgov.org/PdfUpload/DEBRIS%20HAUL.pdf

Reminders for Residents:

• Storm-related tree/vegetation debris should be piled in the road Right-of-Way (ROW), which is usually the grassy area of residential front lawns, behind the pavement or outside of the fence. Debris may NOT be placed on the road. The debris haulers will not pick it up.

• Residential storm-related debris should be piled up by October 20, 2024, for pick-up by our contracted debris haulers. After that date, you must remove your own debris, as our contractor will come through one time.

• Do not place household garbage or other storm debris (ruined carpets, flooring, appliances, etc.) for pick-up. Our debris collection contractor will NOT pick it up.

• Do not place storm-related debris on the roadway pavement, vacant property, County parks, etc. Again, our debris collection contractor will NOT pick it up.

Due to the overwhelming demand created by Hurricane Milton, it may take several weeks or longer to collect and thoroughly remove all storm-related debris. We ask for patience and understanding during this process.

If you have any questions, you may contact Sumter County's Citizens Information Center (CIC) at 352-689-4400 or text 352-282-0573.

Sumter County thanks residents for their patience during Hurricane Milton's aftermath. Sumter County staff is working hard to restore our roadways and communities as quickly as possible.
