Wind symphony to perform variety of musical styles Nov. 19

Northwest Missouri State University's Wind Symphony will showcase a repertoire spanning across genres at a fall concert this month.

The concert, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Mary Linn Auditorium at the Ron Houston Center for Performing Arts.

The ensemble will perform various musical pieces, including Omar Thomas's "Forward/Still," Philip Sparke's "Three Klezmer Miniatures," Chen Yi's "Spring Festival," Malcolm Arnold's "Peterloo Overture," Damiano Drei's and Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzon per Sonar Primi Toni a 8," and "Florentiner March" by Julius Fucik and John R. Bourgeois.

"We are playing a wide variety of literature, in terms of origins, style, cultural heritage and even size of the group," said Dr. Kathryn Strickland, an associate professor of fine and performing arts who serves as Northwest's Dennis C. Dau Professor of Instrumental Music and conducts the Wind Symphony. "From jazz to Chinese tonality to a double brass choir from the Medieval era, audience members are bound to find plenty to enjoy."

The Northwest Wind Symphony is the University's premier wind ensemble and performs the best standard selections from all styles and periods, in addition to recent repertoire for wind bands.
