DOE Publishes 2022 BAWR Dashboard to Enhance Worker Health Monitoring

The Department of Energy (DOE) has successfully completed the 2022 Beryllium-Associated Worker Registry (BAWR) Dashboard, further advancing its efforts to monitor the health of workers exposed to beryllium. On October 7, 2024, the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) team published the updated dashboard following approval from the DOE BAWR Program Manager, with notifications sent to stakeholders.

The BAWR program, managed by the Office of Domestic and International Health Studies, operates as a comprehensive surveillance registry for both current and former DOE workers who may have been exposed to beryllium. The registry plays an essential role in tracking the incidence and prevalence of beryllium sensitization and chronic beryllium disease (CBD), a serious lung condition caused by beryllium exposure.

The 2022 dashboard retains the familiar structure of the 2019 version while offering data to track worker health trends and exposure. The information gathered from the registry will be analyzed to enhance understanding of CBD, help identify at-risk workers, and assess the effectiveness of DOE's Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program.

The completion of the 2022 update underscores DOE's commitment to safeguarding worker health through transparency and proactive safety measures. The BAWR dashboard is an important tool in improving prevention programs and ensuring that DOE facilities remain compliant with health and safety standards.
