U.S. Senate, U.K. Parliament Committee Chairs: Sudan Deserves Urgent and Unified Global Response

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.K. Member of Parliament Sarah Champion, Chair of the International Development Committee, released a statement on the ongoing humanitarian situation in Sudan-currently the world's largest displacement crisis. Since the conflict began in April 2023, 8.4 million people have been internally displaced, and an additional 3.1 million have fled across the border to neighboring countries.

"The Chairs of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and the House of Commons International Development Committee are outraged by the lack of action to address catastrophic violence unfolding in Sudan. Harrowing accounts of widespread human rights atrocities and the looming shadow of famine - threatening millions of innocent lives - demand an urgent and unified global response.

"We call on our respective Governments to stand united, wielding their full diplomatic power and financial resources alongside civil society to dismantle barriers to humanitarian aid, pursue a diplomatic solution to end this devastating conflict, and hold those responsible for atrocities accountable.

"The world cannot-and must not-abandon the people of Sudan in their darkest hour. Their immense suffering needs our unwavering focus and decisive action to restore peace, justice, and dignity for all."
