Safety Passport program can earn participants cash, time off

BREMERTON, Wash. -

Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility employees and service members can earn a $300 cash bonus or an eight-hour time-off award for completing the PSNS & IMF Safety Passport.

The Passport is a safety tool designed to help employees heighten their safety awareness and improve their safety communication skills. There are 30 mandatory activities to choose from for regular employees and an additional nine for supervisors that can be completed to earn an award; including a mandatory test. Employees must complete at least 25 of the 30 activities.

According to Sal Chavez, branch manager, Code 900S, Waterfront Safety Office, qualifying activities include things like participating in a shop or code daily interactive safety brief, conducting tool checks, conducting pre-jobsite inspections, sharing something they did to improve their home safety, to name a few.

Employees can only earn the cash or time-off award once in their career at PSNS & IMF. This program is different than the VPP Safety Passport previously available at PSNS & IMF. Employees who previously completed the VPP passport still qualify for an award upon completing of the PSNS & IMF Safety Passport.

According to Chavez, the goal of the safety passport program is to help create a safe work environment that minimizes the risk of injuries to employees, from activities both at work and at home.

"This program helps move us toward our goal of creating a work culture and environment free of injury and illness by improving safety education and communication through active participation," Chavez said. "This program is a great opportunity to improve the overall safety culture and knowledge of our workforce, while also rewarding them for their efforts to help make that improvement."

To complete the process, employees should sign and date each activity as it is completed. Their immediate supervisor, their shop or code safety advocate; Code 106, Environment, Safety and Health Programs; or Code 304, Ship Safety, personnel can sign the approval line to certify the employee has completed a task.

Once at least 25 of the activities, including the mandatory test, have been completed, employees can give them to their shop or code safety advocate or bring them to the Code 900S office located in Building 435, 3rd floor, room 309B.

For more information or to obtain a safety passport, employees can reach out to their shop safety advocates or go to the Code 900S Safety Passport page at https://homeportnw.psns.navy.mil/dept/900/900B/900S/Lists/Safety%20Passport%20Guide/AllItems.
