Online Graphic Design Students Provide Graphics Extraordinaire at Brick

Oct 17, 2024

Graphics Extraordinaire 2024 has been a satisfying surprise for Western Nevada College Graphic Design Professor Jayna Conkey.

Since the college opened her classes to online students, she has learned web-based students are just as creative and artistic as her in-person students.

"When we began to offer online courses, I was worried that the quality of the student work would suffer, but this has not been the case," Conkey said. "All of the work in this exhibition was created by students in online courses and, as you can see, the quality of the work is exceptional. What pleases me the most is the level of creativity I have found with these online students."

Presented by the Capital City Artis Initiative, the Graphics Extraordinaire exhibit is open to the public through Dec. 5 in the Community Development Building (the Brick), 108 E Proctor St., in Carson City. Gallery viewing hours at the Brick are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

WNC students participating in the exhibition are Will Acuavera, Analisa Bates, Kaitlyn Insell, Kennadee Irving, Amy Rivinius, MJ Vinson and Madeline Wilson.

WNC's Graphic Design program offers online as well as in-person courses for the Spring 2025 semester, and students can earn the entire degree online.

"Providing online courses has extended our reach and we've had students from around the country earn degrees from WNC," Conkey said.
