Park & Recreation Department earns national accreditation

The City of Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has earned a place among the nation's elite park and recreation agencies by achieving accreditation through the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA). This prestigious recognition was awarded during the 2024 NRPA Annual Conference.

CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies and serves as a benchmark for quality in overall operations, management and service to the community. This mark of distinction signifies the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department has met rigorous standards regarding the management and administration of lands, facilities, resources, programs, safety and services.

To earn this distinction, the department demonstrated compliance with 151 recognized standards and documented all policies and procedures. The comprehensive process not only highlights efficiency but also elevates accountability, resulting in enhanced service quality for the Fort Worth community.

"This accreditation is a tremendous honor for the City of Fort Worth and our Park & Recreation team," said Richard Zavala, director of the Fort Worth Park & Recreation Department. "It reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering the highest quality parks, programs and services to our residents. Achieving this national recognition reinforces our dedication to the well-being of our community and the preservation of our city's treasured outdoor spaces."

The accreditation process includes a formal application, self-assessment, a site visit by a team of trained volunteers who produce a written report, and a final hearing with the commission to grant accreditation.

The commission is comprised of representatives from NRPA, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials, the International City/County Management Association, The Academy for Leisure Sciences, the Armed Forces Recreation Network, the Council of State Executive Directors, The National Recreation and Park Ethnic Minority Society, the National Association of State Park Directors, and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association.
