BPD Remembers: The men and women of the Boston Police Department remember the service and sacrifice of Officer Charles McNabb who was killed in the line of duty 56 years ago. On Saturday, November 23, 1968, Officer McNabb was shot and killed in the area of 1202 Commonwealth Avenue in Allston.
McNabb, who was a 13-year veteran of the department, was 36-years-old at the time of his death. Making his passing ever more tragic is the fact that he left behind and was survived by a grieving wife and four children. Following in the footsteps of his father, his son, David, would join the Boston Police Department as a police officer in 1989.
Officer McNabb was laid to rest at New Calvary Cemetery in Mattapan. His name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington D.C., Panel 40, West Line 3. His name is also forever engraved on the Hero Wall at Boston Police Headquarters and the Massachusetts Law Enforcement Memorial at the State House in Boston.
In Boston, a Hero Sign has been placed in his honor in the area of 1202 Commonwealth Avenue in Allston. The sign is to forever honor the memory of a man who gave his life in service to his city. If you ever find yourself in the area and you happen to see his Hero Sign, kindly take a moment to honor and acknowledge the service and sacrifice of a brave man who died protecting and serving his city.
