De Rosa's academic journey began in Bermuda, where she was raised before moving to the United States to attend Vassar College. After exploring her interests in research and animal neuroscience, she pursued a Ph.D. in experimental psychology at Harvard University, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford University. Throughout her career, her research has focused on the chemistry of the brain and its critical role in learning, memory and attention.
De Rosa joined Cornell's faculty in 2013 as an associate professor, bringing with her a wealth of interdisciplinary expertise. She was later named the Mibs Martin Follett Professor in Human Ecology. In July 2021, De Rosa made history by becoming the first woman and first person of color to serve as Cornell's dean of faculty.
"What attracted me to the role is knowing that I can help people. And so, using these resources that I have as dean of faculty for good is a goal of mine," she said.
Join Erin Sember-Chase and Toral Patel from the Department of Inclusion and Belonging for a bi-weekly podcast series where they explore various topics related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging at work. During each episode's interview, they provide a platform for campus colleagues in various roles to share their lived experiences, thoughts and ideas around how to create cultures of belonging, especially in the workplace. You can listen to this podcast on your phone, at your desk, on your way to work, while you are taking a break, even while you get ready for bed!
Throughout her five-year term, De Rosa has prioritized initiatives to enhance equity for research, teaching and extension (RTE) faculty, foster interdisciplinary hiring and strengthen collaboration across the university. Now, in her final year, she reflects on her commitment to embedding inclusivity into Cornell's culture and creating a unified community.
"Inclusive excellence is embedded in everything we do," De Rosa said. "It's not a policy. It's daily actions. And we have an opportunity for us as a community to really come together. Wherever we see fractures, we want to heal them, and we want to mend them. We're all interconnected, so we genuinely need to be working together, as best as possible, speaking with one Cornell voice."
