Published: 12-13-2024 | Category: Troop L

Covington - On December 13, 2024, at approximately 6:05 a.m., Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop L responded to a two-vehicle crash on LA Hwy 437 near Royal Pine Drive in St. Tammany Parish. The crash claimed the life of 26-year-old Benjamin Bonura of Amite.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Bonura was working as a sanitation hopper on the rear of a 2020 International garbage truck, which was stopped southbound on LA Hwy 437. At the same time, a 2024 Hyundai Elantra was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 437. For reasons still under investigation, the Hyundai failed to stop, collided with the rear of the International, and struck Bonura.

Bonura was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the International, who was properly restrained, sustained no injuries. The driver of the Hyundai, who was properly restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. As part of the ongoing investigation, a routine toxicology sample was obtained from both drivers for analysis.

Troopers wish to remind motorists of the importance of making responsible decisions while operating a motor vehicle. Never drive impaired, fatigued, ill, or distracted. Additionally, Louisiana law requires that every person inside a motor vehicle, regardless of seating position, remain properly restrained. While not all crashes are survivable, taking simple precautions like these can often mean the difference between life and death. If you witness any hazardous situations, please dial *LSP (*577) to report them to the Louisiana State Police.
