City Breaks Ground on New Affordable Housing Project in Alamitos Beach Area

Long Beach, CA - On Nov. 21, 2024, the City of Long Beach commemorated the start of construction for 300 Alamitos, an 82-unit affordable housing project in the Alamitos Beach area for low-income seniors and seniors who have experienced homelessness. This five-story community of one-bedroom homes designed by Mercy Housing California will feature a large open space courtyard and recreation area, an indoor lounge and community space, as well as resident support services.

"300 Alamitos will be a safe, dignified place seniors can call home," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "This new development underscores the City's unwavering commitment to creating more affordable housing options and enhancing livability throughout Long Beach."

At a morning groundbreaking event that featured the ceremonial shovel-turning of dirt, Mayor Rex Richardson and other City of Long Beach representatives were joined at the construction site by local, county and state partners along with executives from Mercy Housing and Wells Fargo.

The project, located at a former parking lot at its namesake address of 300 Alamitos Ave., will serve qualified older adults ages 55 and older. The site is adjacent to Downtown's East Village and is central to public transit, grocery stores, museums, a senior center and public parks. Construction is scheduled for completion in late summer 2026.

"Our priority is ensuring our community has access to more affordable housing options," said Vice Mayor and Second District Councilwoman Cindy Allen. "By investing in affordable housing for our low-income older adult residents and seniors who have experienced homelessness, we're creating a lasting legacy of compassion, care and inclusivity for generations to come."

The City, through its Community Development Department,is continuing its fast-track efforts to support the building of safe, quality housing for residents across all income levels while increasing the development of underused sites across the city. Earlier this year, three other affordable housing projects held grand openings-26 Point 2 near the Traffic Circle, Wellspring in Cambodia Town and Heritage Gardens in the Midtown area-and construction was started for a fourth, 1400 Long Beach, also in the Midtown area.

The 300 Alamitos site was purchased by The California Land Acquisition Fund Holding I, LLC, a wholly owned land acquisition arm of Mercy Housing, Inc. for $4.9 million with funding support of $5 million in state Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) funds from The Long Beach Community Investment Company (LBCIC), the City's nonprofit affiliate.

"Affordable housing options like 300 Alamitos show our commitment to the vitality of our great city while honoring the life experiences and challenges of its population."

Mercy Housing is one of the nation's largest affordable housing organizations, participating in the development, preservation, management and/or financing of affordable, program-enriched housing across the country.

"The urgent need for stable, supportive and affordable housing for seniors in Long Beach continues to grow," said Mercy Housing California Vice President for Real Estate Ed Holder. "We are proud to have partnered with the City of Long Beach to provide that stability to the seniors who need it most and will be especially proud to welcome them to downtown Long Beach."

CTY Housing, which is based in Venice, California and provides development and financial services for affordable housing developers, will serve as the co-developer of 300 Alamitos.
