SGMC Health Honors Hospice Duo with DAISY and BEE Awards

Breonah Rockmore, DAISY Award Winner, and Maggie Herrin, BEE Award Winner, honored at Hospice of South Georgia

SGMC Health is proud to recognize Breonah "Bre" Rockmore and Maggie Herrin as the recipients of the December DAISY and BEE (Being Extraordinary Every Day) Awards for their extraordinary dedication, teamwork, and compassionate care during Hurricane Helene.

Breonah Rockmore, a nurse at Hospice of South Georgia (HOSG), was honored with the DAISY Award, which celebrates nurses who provide exceptional, compassionate care to patients and families. Herrin, a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Langdale Hospice House, was awarded the BEE Award, which recognizes non-nursing staff members who exemplify outstanding support to the nursing team and embody SGMC Health's core values.

While serving as the on-call nurse on the evening of the storm, Rockmore volunteered to work from the Langdale Hospice House, HOSG's inpatient facility, to assist with patient care and triage calls. As the storm intensified, she maintained contact with a patient running critically low on oxygen. Recognizing the dire situation, she and Herrin took immediate action. Around 6 a.m., knowing emergency services were overwhelmed and road conditions were hazardous, they transported two oxygen tanks by foot through debris-covered streets to the patient's home, located about a mile away.

Thanks to their unwavering dedication and quick thinking, they reached the patient just in time, provided essential care, and arranged for the patient's safe transfer to the Hospice house. These team members' selfless act exemplifies the compassion, courage, and patient-first focus that these awards celebrate.

DAISY awards are presented monthly in front of the nurse's colleagues, physicians, patients, and visitors. Each honoree receives a certificate commending her or him for being an "Extraordinary Nurse." They also receive a beautiful sculpture called A Healer's Touch, hand-carved by artists of the Shona Tribe in Africa. A special floral arrangement of daisies was generously donated by The Flower Gallery, the local sponsor of SGMC Health's DAISY Award.

The BEE Award (Being Exceptional Every Day) celebrates non-nursing staff who go above and beyond to support patient care and the nursing team. Recipients are recognized with a certificate and a unique BEE pin.

SGMC Health offers a variety of recognition programs to honor employees who embody its core values of "Remarkable People, Extraordinary Care, Human Kindness." To learn more about these awards and other recognition programs, visit sgmc.org/recognition.
